Tips For Choosing Your First Stairlift

If your doctor has recommended that you install a stairlift in your house to cope with your mobility issues, it's important that you select one that's going to be sufficient for all of your needs. Since you may not be familiar with the things you should be looking for, you should take some time to explore all of your options. Here are a few of the things that you need to consider.

Power Source

Stairlift models come with one of two power supplies. You can choose from either battery-operated systems or AC power. With a battery-operated system, you don't have to worry about losing the functionality of your stairlift in the face of a power failure. Unfortunately, the batteries can burn out rapidly, so you may want to think about investing in a rechargable battery system.

While you don't have to worry about AC-powered units burning out, you do risk the stairlift being disabled due to a power failure. You might worry about power cords being a nuisance with these systems, but that isn't actually a risk. The power cord is run through the track, so it's placed securely out of the way of the actual chair.

Manufacturer's Warranty

When you buy a new stairlift, it should come with the factory warranty from the manufacturer. These warranty periods can vary widely based on the model of the lift and the manufacturer who produces it. Make sure that you're clear on exactly what kind of warranty coverage you'll be getting before you make a commitment.

Emergency Shut-Off

While the last thing you want to think about from your new stairlift is the risk of malfunction, it's important to recognize the potential for that to happen. Since you won't have a way to address the issue if you're stuck partway up or down the stairs, you'll want to look for a model that's constructed with an emergency shut-=off switch. That way, if the lift malfunctions, you can easily disable it so that you are safe.

Added Amenities

As you start looking at the different stairlift models, you'll find that there are many different amenities that you can have added to your system. For example, if you're concerned about safety, look for a model that has an integrated seat belt. You should also look at the benefits of adding a set of foot rests, hinged safety rails, and even an extra-padded seat cushion for overall comfort.
